Ancient Wisdom: Nyingma Teachings of Dream Yoga, Mediatation & Transformation - Gyatrul Rinpoche (trans. by B. Alan Wallace & Sangye Khandro)
This book consists of a series of teachings on several topics by the highly respected Tibetan lama Gyatrul Rinpoche, skillfully translated by B. Alan Wallace and Sangye Khandro. It's divided into three parts, titled "Transformation," "Dream Yoga" and "Meditation," and each of these three parts consists of a "root text" by a renowned Tibetan author and a commentary by Gyatrul Rinpoche. The first root text is a wonderful "lojong" (mind training) text called "Transforming Felicity and Adversity into the Spiritual Path," by Jigme Tenpe Nyima. The second is a dream yoga text called "Releasing Oneself from Essential Delusion," by Lochen Dharma Shri, and the third is a Dzogchen text called "The Illumination of Primordial Wisdom," by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche. Taken together, these three texts and their lucid and practical commentaries give a very complete introduction to the essential teachings of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, and will be a great treasure for anyone interest in practicing these profound methods.

Universal Love: The Yoga Method of Buddha Maitreya - Lama Thubten Yeshe
Lama Yeshe gives a commentary on the practice of Maitreya Buddha. "Maitreya is the manifestation of the love of all the Buddhas - all the supreme beings who have achieved limitless, universal love. When we practice the yoga method of Buddha Maitreya we unify with the universal love energy that is Maitreya by developing to their ultimate extent the limited qualities of love, compassion and purity that presently lie within us…Tantra is the right practice for Westerners and of the utmost need in the twentieth century. After all, the Buddha wanted us to have as much perfect pleasure as possible; he certainly didn't want us to be miserable, confused or dissatisfied. Therefore we should understand that we meditate in order to gain profound pleasure, not to beat ourselves up or to experience pain. If entering the Buddhist path brings you nothing but fear and guilt then it's certainly not worth the effort." Lama Thubten Yeshe.

The Jewel Ornament of Liberation: The Wish-Fulfilling Gem of the Noble Teachings - Gampopa & Khenpo Konchog Gyeltsen Rinpoche
A new translation of this master work of Tibetan Buddhism. This text provides a complete foundation for Buddhist study and practice. For more than eight centuries, this text has provided the backbone of study particularly in the Kagyu tradition - covering the initial entry into the path and continuing through finding a spiritual master, teachings on impermanance, karma, bodhicitta, Buddha nature, six perfections, ten bodhisattva bhumis, Buddhahood and the activities of a Buddha. "Anyone who knows the Jewel Ornament well can say that they really understand Buddhism." Khenpo Konchog Gyaltsen. "Dharma Lord Gampopa (1074-1153) was the principle student of Milarepa. He brought two systems of teachings together: Atisha's Kadampa tradition and Naropa's Mahamudra tradition. His teachings were said to be clear `like the sun'. "The Jewel Ornament of Liberation" is considered to be the most significant of his many texts.

A Flash of Lightning in the Dark of Night: A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life - Dalai Lama
A Flash of Lightning in the Dark of Night: A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life - Dalai Lama
If everyone considered only the well-being of others as the bodhisattva's way of life directs, the world would be a much better place. As it is, those who dream of such a society need both mystical and practical advice regarding what they can do to further the effort. They'll find it here. The Dalai Lama's teaching and reflection on the text of Shantideva provide a gentle guide to compassion and enlightenment. Throughout his explanations, the Dalai Lama refers to the experience of daily living. For most readers his examples will ring true, particularly when he is talking about the very human emotions of anger and frustration. The call to serve others and think of others first may seem idealistic, but it is the goal of enlightenmentsomething to work toward whatever one's path. One does not have to be a Buddhist to appreciate the beauty of the teachings and the simplicity of the life presented here. Indeed, non-Buddhists may discover a refreshing new approach to the doctrines of love your neighbor and do unto others.

Space and Eternal Life: A Dialogue between Chandra Wickramasinghe & Daisaku Ikeda
This is a volume of discussions between an astronomer and a Buddhist scholar. They examine life on Earth from two different starting points - the religious Buddhist and the natural science of the astronomer, largely concerned with physics. The use of natural science is discussed in its exploration of the physical world, its treatment of psychology and states of consciousness, and Buddhist ideas of cosmology, and how these concepts are in tune with each other. They debate reductionism, one of the key factors that distinguishes the practice of scientific investigation against the pacifist, holistic and ecological world view that is inherent in Buddhism and its underlying philosophy. In the last chapter two protagonists discuss key issues of today and how they relate to these tenets: nuclear arms, ecology, AIDS, youth and education, the family, democracy, human rights, suicide, abortion, genetic engineering and organ transplants.

Practicing Peace in Times of War - Pema Chödrön
Practicing Peace in Times of War - Pema Chödrön
Practicing Peace in Times of War is a short, pithy, and profound work that includes practical strategies for cultivating the seeds of peace and compassion amid life’s upsets and challenges. Readers who appreciate Pema Chödrön’s books will be delighted to listen to her warm and encouraging voice. The book Practicing Peace in Times of War is based on six of Pema Chödrön’s public talks.
Chödrön begins with some disquieting observations, such as that we can all be fundamentalists—that is, self-righteous and closed-minded—and that peace demonstrators are not terribly peaceful. Like other Buddhist teachers on the subject of political action, she sees a direct connection between what is in the heart and expressed in outward actions. She teaches how to stop the reflexive and habitual emotional reaction to perceived hostility through patience, pausing, breathing. It's not easy, but it is simple. Chödrön is also provocative: insecurity has a positive function, she suggests, so don't run away from it. Some of what this skillful teacher says is almost too simple or underexplained, which can happen when a talk becomes a book, as is the case here. "Don't spin off" is a condensed instruction that is a little too condensed. While it may intrigue beginners, this book will be a better gift for those who are already familiar with Chödrön's body of work.

New Buddhist Movements in Thailand - Rory Mackenzie
New Buddhist Movements in Thailand - Rory Mackenzie
Vastly different in belief and practice, two new Buddhist religious movements in Thailand, namely the Wat Phra Dhammakaya and Santi Asoke emerged in Thailand in the 1970s at a time of political uncertainty, social change and increasing dissatisfaction with the Thai Sangha and its leadership. Examining these movements, which represent two distinctive trends within contemporary Buddhism in Thailand, this book explains why they have come into being, what they have reacted against and what they offer to their members. Both movements have a wide membership outside of Thailand, with temples in the UK, Europe, USA, Japan and Australia. "New Buddhist Movements in Thailand" will appeal to those interested in Buddhism's confrontation with modernity, and its responses to evolving social issues in Thailand, as well as to those interested in new religions in the broader context of religious studies.

Planet Yoga: Music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace
If you ever attended a yoga class where background music was played or if you have read any yoga magazines, chances are that you are familiar with most of the artists compiled under this two-Cd album. Names such as Krishna Das, Jay Uttal, Deva Premal and Rasa, just to name a few, are some of the great artists grouped here. Even if you don't practice yoga, but enjoy listening to world (or trance) music, you'll probably enjoy this tape as much as I do.
The first Cd has Indian healing chants but performed by westerners, (as Krishna Das writes on the intro to the booklet); so if the lyrics are Indian, the music is not. It may fall in the category of enviromental or acoustic which makes it more appealing for our western taste.

Explorations in Daoism: Medicine and Alchemy in Literature - Yoke Ho
Explorations in Daoism: Medicine and Alchemy in Literature - Yoke Ho
The Daoist canon is the definitive fifteenth century compilation of texts concerning ritual, alchemical and meditation practices within Daoist religion. Many of these texts are undated and anonymous, so dating them is essential for a clear understanding of the development of Chinese alchemy, and the place of these texts in history.
Ho Peng Yoke's Explorations in Daoism brings together an extraordinary compendium of data on alchemical knowledge in China, describing the methods used for dating important alchemical texts in the Daoist canon, and reconstructing and translating a number of alchemical texts that exist only in fragments scattered throughout the Daoist canon, pharmacopoeia and other compendia.
This book provides a clear guide for students and scholars about the methods required for dating and reconstituting texts using techniques that can be applied to other areas of traditional Chinese culture also. As such, this book will appeal to those interested in Chinese alchemy, the history of science, Daoism and Chinese history.

Theravada Buddhism: A Social History from Ancient Benares to Modern Colombo - Richa Gombrich
Theravada Buddhism: A Social History from Ancient Benares to Modern Colombo - Richa Gombrich
Theravada Buddhism is widely recognized as the classic introduction to the branch of Buddhism found in Sri Lanka and parts of South East Asia. The Buddha preached in north-east India in about the fifth-century BC. He claimed that human beings are responsible for their own salvation, and put forward a new ideal of the holy life, establishing a monastic Order to enable men and women to pursue that ideal. For most of its history the fortunes of Theravada, the most conservative form of Buddhism, have been identified with those of that Order. Under the great Indian emperor, Asoka, himself a Buddhist, Theravada reached Sri Lanka in about 250 BC. There it became the religion of the Sinhala state, and from there it spread, much later, to Burma and Thailand.
Richard Gombrich, the leading authority on Theravada Buddhism, has updated his text and bibliographies to take account of recent research, including the controversies of the date of the Buddha and recent social and political developments in Sri Lanka.. He explores the legacy of the Buddha's predecessors and the social and religious contexts against which Buddhism has developed and changed throughout history. Above all, he shows how it has always influenced and been influenced by its social surroundings in a way which continues to this day.

British Buddhism: Teachings, Practice And Development
British Buddhism: Teachings, Practice And Development
This book presents a useful insight into contemporary British Buddhist practice. It provides a survey of the seven largest Buddhist traditions in the United Kingdom, including the Forest Sangha (Theravada) and the Samatha Trust (Theravada), the Serene Reflection Meditation tradition (Soto Zen) and Soka Gakkai (both originally Japanese), the Tibetan Karma Kagyu and New Kadampa traditions and Friends of the Western Buddhist Order. Based on extensive fieldwork, the author determines how and to what extent British Buddhists groups are changing from their Asian roots, and whether any forms of "British Buddhism" are beginning to emerge.
Despite the popularity of Buddhism in Britain, there has so far been no study documenting the full range of teachings and practice. This book fills this gap. It serves as an important reference point for further studies in this increasingly popular field.

Graceful Exits: How Great Beings Die: Death Stories Of Tibetan, Hindu And Zen Masters - Sushila Blackman (editor)
Graceful Exits: How Great Beings Die: Death Stories Of Tibetan, Hindu And Zen Masters - Sushila Blackman (editor)
Koans and stories of the deaths of Masters are scattered throughout the sacred texts of the East. This book is remarkable in that it brings those many stories together in one place. By focusing a book on the theme of "death stories", the stories illumine each other, and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The stories reveal a wonderfully refreshing way to think about death (and hence, to think about Life!) Many are solemn, but some are quite humorous. In each, we see the presence of someone who embraces all of human experience, who says "Yes!" to all of Life, including death. Many of the Masters give one final gem of wisdom, summarizing their life's teaching, as their last word. The many photographs of the Masters are heart-warming. For anyone ready to think about death and mortality in terms of their spritual meaning, this book is ideal. Ironically, through looking at how the Masters die, we can implicitly understand their teaching on how to be ever more fully alive.

Yoga: On Sacred Ground - Chinmaya Dunster
This album was written to accompany an hour-long session of Hatha yoga. The composer, longtime yoga expert Chinmaya Dunster, divided the program into seven songs to reflect the body's seven chakras, or energy points. He alternates between slow and mystical compositions and more uptempo, energy-driven pieces that match the varying paces of the Hatha workout. The rich, textured sounds of this music seem to acknowledge an entire host of international traditions, but ultimately there is a distinctly Indian flavor, due to the generous use of the sarod, an Indian stringed instrument.

Enlightenment Guaranteed (1999)
Enlightenment Guaranteed (1999)
Noted German filmmaker Doris Dorrie directs this understated comedy about two middle-aged brothers who go to study at a Zen monastery in Japan. The two brothers could not be more different. Uwe (Uwe Ochsenknecht) is a bored husband and kitchenware salesman, while Gustav (Gustav Peter Wohler) is a flighty feng shui consultant and Eastern religions devotee. Just as Gustav is preparing to leave for the land of the rising sun, Uwe, whose wife just dumped him, begs his brother to let him tag along. The first night in Tokyo proves to be a disaster. After a night of drinking, the pair get lost, spend the last of their cash on an ill-fated taxi ride, lose their credit cards, and end up sleeping in some boxes on the city streets. But this deprivation prepares them for the hard living of monastic life, including 4:30 a.m. wake up calls, elaborate dining rituals, long periods of silent mediation, and a punishing cleaning routine. As the days wear on, Gustav soon finds himself buckling under the strain while Uwe demonstrates himself to be much more adaptable to a monk's life. The experience eventually brings the night-and-day brothers closer together. This film was screened at the 2000 Rotterdam Film Festival.

Evening Snow - Tani Senzan
Evening Snow - Tani Senzan
This is the first of only two CDs recorded by Senzan Tani; the other one, Zen Spirit, is a solo album. Senzan Tani is a student of the Uyeda chool of shakuhachi while Yoko Tanaka studied at the Tadao Sawai school, Sawai being the best-known koto player of the second half of the century. This fine CD presents a series of traditional and contemporary Japanese classical pieces for koto and shakuhachi. Among the traditional pieces are "Chidori No Kyoku" (The Plover) for both instruments and "Midare" for koto solo, two of the best masterworks of the repertoire. Among the contemporary pieces, there are two excellent pieces: "Tori No Yoni" (The Dream of the Bird) from Tadao Sawai for koto solo and "Sekibetsu No Mai" (Farewell Dance) for koto and shakuhachi by the renowned shakuhachi player Kohachiro Miyata. This excellent CD has a splendid overview of Japanese music. The two contemporary pieces show that the writing on these traditional instrument provides high quality music. Highly recommended.

The Art of Peace - Morihei Ueshiba
The Art of Peace - Morihei Ueshiba
The real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. So taught the great Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969), founder of the Japanese martial art of Aikido. Aikido is a disciple Ueshiba called the “Art of Peace.” It offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict, and he believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal and business relationships, as well as in our interactions with society. These succinct and pithy teachings are drawn from his talks and writings. The collection is compiled by the renowned modern Aikidoist John Stevens, a disciple of Ueshiba.

I Am That: Talks with Sri Nisargadatta - Nisargadatta Maharaj
I Am That: Talks with Sri Nisargadatta - Nisargadatta Maharaj
A simple man, Nisargadatta Maharaj, was a householder and petty shopkeeper in Bombay where he lived, and died in 1981 at the age of 84. He had not been educated formally, but came to be respected and loved for his insights into the crux of human pain and the extraordinary usidity of his direct discourse. Hundreds of diverse seekers traveled the globe and sought him out in his unpretentious home to hear him. To all of them he gave hope that "beyond the real experience is not the mind, but the self, the light in which everything appears...the awareness in which everything happens." "I Am That" preserves Maharaj's dialogues with the followers who came from around the world seeking his guidance in destroying false identities. The sage's sole concern was with human suffering and the ending of suffering. It was his mission to guide the individual to an understanding of his true nature and the timelessness of being. He taught that mind must recognize and penetrate its own state of being, "being this or that, here or that, then or now," but just timeless being.

Imagining Karma: Ethical Transformation in Amerindian, Buddhist, and Greek Rebirth - Gananath Obeyesekere
Imagining Karma: Ethical Transformation in Amerindian, Buddhist, and Greek Rebirth - Gananath Obeyesekere
This work is a tour-de-force in cross-cultural scholarship, both sound and bold, constructing a new and refreshing theory on the rise to prominence of rebirth eschatology in India. Obeyesekere argues convincingly that "ethicization" of rebirth through the theory of karma was the new ingredient that transformed a commonplace belief into a central philosophical and eschatological principle in most of Indian theologies. This is a book that will engage and challenge anthropologists, classicists, and Indologists alike, as well as non-specialists interested in culture and religion." - Patrick Olivelle, University of Texas at Austin "This is a book in the grand tradition of comparative studies, pulling together anthropology, psychology, psychoanalysis, classics, Indology, and history of religions, but in a distinctly contemporary mode. Few scholars would attempt such a project today, let alone pull it off so intriguingly as Obeyesekere does. A brilliant and intellectually courageous book.

Tibetan Meditations, Music & Prayers for Opening the Heart - Nawang Khechog
Tibetan Meditations, Music & Prayers for Opening the Heart - Nawang Khechog
A lot of artists evoke the spirit of Tibet, but Nawang Khechog is actually a former Tibetan monk, who took off the robes and took up the flute to travel the world 20 years ago. His albums are usually slotted in the New Age and meditation genres, and certainly his packaging and imagery inspire that. Unfortunately, it overshadows a music that is perhaps deeper, or at least more artistically profound, than that. Tibetan Meditation Music scans less like a background for contemplation and more like a tone poem to the spirit. The opening track seems like an Asian refraction of "Amazing Grace," with Tsering Khechog singing over Nawang Khechog's flute. Khechog's music draws on folk and spiritual traditions but takes them further afield. Think Arvo Pärt on the Tibetan plateau with strings droning a minor-key refrain while Tibetan bells and chimes sound in the background and Khechog chants. I do wish Khechog had brought along just a touch of the drama and shifting moods heard on some of his earlier discs, like the Kitaro-produced Karuna. Tibetan Meditation Music is unvarying in its somber tone. Khechog's chants, which are intimately spoken, whispered more than sung, don't always work on a musical level. But his performances on wood flute are deep explorations into tone and melod

Visions of Compassion: Western Scientists and Tibetan Buddhists Examine Human Nature
Visions of Compassion: Western Scientists and Tibetan Buddhists Examine Human Nature
This book examines how Western behavioral science--which has generally focused on negative aspects of human nature--holds up to cross-cultural scrutiny, in particular the Tibetan Buddhist celebration of the human potential for altruism, empathy, and compassion. Resulting from a meeting between the Dalai Lama, leading Western scholars, and a group of Tibetan monks, this volume includes excerpts from these extraordinary dialogues as well as engaging essays exploring points of difference and overlap between the two perspectives.

Buddha - Karen Armstrong
Buddha - Karen Armstrong
Books on Buddhism may overflow the shelves, but the life story of the Buddha himself has remained obscure despite over 2,500 years of influence on millions of people around the world. In an attempt to rectify this, and to make the Buddha and Buddhism accessible to Westerners, the beloved scholar and author of such sweeping religious studies as A History of God has written a readable, sophisticated, and somewhat unconventional biography of one of the most influential people of all time. Buddha himself fought against the cult of personality, and the Buddhist scriptures were faithful, giving few details of his life and personality. Karen Armstrong mines these early scriptures, as well as later biographies, then fleshes the story out with an explanation of the cultural landscape of the 6th century B.C., creating a deft blend of biography, history, philosophy, and mythology.
At the age of 29, Siddhartha Gautama walked away from the insulated pleasure palace that had been his home and joined a growing force of wandering monks searching for spiritual enlightenment during an age of upheaval. Armstrong traces Gautama's journey through yoga and asceticism and grounds it in the varied religious teachings of the time. In many parts of the world during this so-called axial age, new religions were developing as a response to growing urbanization and market forces. Yet each shared a common impulse--they placed faith increasingly on the individual who was to seek inner depth rather than magical control. Taoism and Confucianism, Hinduism, monotheism in the Middle East and Iran, and Greek rationalism were all emerging as Gautama made his determined way towards enlightenment under the boddhi tree and during the next 45 years that he spent teaching along the banks of the Ganges. Armstrong, in her intelligent and clarifying style, is quick to point out the Buddha's relevance to our own time of transition, struggle, and spiritual void in both his approach--which was based on skepticism and empiricism--and his teachings.

Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction - Damien Keown
Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction - Damien Keown
This accessible volume covers both the teachings of the Buddha and the integration of Buddhism into daily life. What are the distinctive features of Buddhism? What or who is the Buddha, and what are his teachings? How has Buddhist thought developed over the centuries, and how can contemporary dilemmas be faced from a Buddhist perspective? Words such as "karma" and "nirvana" have entered our vocabulary, but what do they really mean? Keown has taught Buddhism at an introductory level for many years, and in this book he provides a lively, challenging response to these frequently asked questions.
