Zen in the Art of Archery - Eugen Herrigel

Zen in the Art of Archery - Eugen Herrigel
So many books have been written about the meditation side of Zen and the everyday, chop wood/carry water side of Zen. But few books have approached Zen the way that most Japanese actually do--through ritualized arts of discipline and beauty--and perhaps that is why Eugen Herrigel's Zen in the Art of Archery is still popular so long after it first publication in 1953. Herrigel, a philosophy professor, spent six years studying archery and flower-arranging in Japan, practicing every day, and struggling with foreign notions such as "eyes that hear and ears that see." In a short, pithy narrative, he brings the heart of Zen to perfect clarity--intuition, imitation, practice, practice, practice, then, boom, wondrous spontaneity fusing self and art, mind, body, and spirit. Herrigel writes with an attention to subtle profundity and relates it with a simple artistry that itself carries the signature of Zen.

Eight Lamas From Drepung Tibetan Sacred Temple Music

My thanks to Kalojan for pointing this out.

Eight Lamas From Drepung Tibetan Sacred Temple Music
Tibetan chordal/microtonal singing is an incredibly cosmic event one has to experience because it goes beyond mere description and ratings. The musical tones generated from deep within these maestros is mystical and quite healing on a cellular level, which is just one of the reasons creative and healing persons have been utilizing tibetan sounds for some time now. the sounds on this disc go directly to one's energy centers and penetrate the molecular core of one's etheric vehicle. there have been reports of astral travel using these sound meditations and the "vocals" intoned here are as powerful and transcendent as any i've heard in my large collection of tibetan music. highly recommended for healing, transcendence, acceptance and a deep experience of inner joy and peace.

Between Two Worlds: A Japanese Pilgrimage

Between Two Worlds: A Japanese Pilgrimage
For centuries, pilgrims have come to the Japanese island of Shikoku to trace the 1,000-mile route known as the "Pilgrimage to the 88 Sacred Places of Shikoku," a journey believed to have been first undertaken by Kobo Daishi, founder of Buddhism's Shingon sect in the ninth century.

This illuminating documentary is a visual meditation on the phenomenon of pilgrimage and, to a lesser extent, on the processes of ethnographic filmmaking. It combines images of traditional and modern Japan, excerpts from the writings of Kobo Daishi, and commentary by pilgrims, everyday Japanese, and the filmmakers themselves to explore the meaning and persistence of "pilgrimage" in contemporary industrial Japan.

By examining the effects that rapid change has had on this ritual journey, the film asks: Why do people still undertake pilgrimages to "sacred" places? This thought-provoking documentary will generate discussion in courses in Asian studies, Japanese studies, cultural anthropology, Buddhism, and comparative religion. It was produced by Joanne Hershfield and Susan Caperna Lloyd.

Natural Perfection - Lama Surya Das

Natural Perfection: Teachings, Meditations and Chants in the Dzogchen Tradition of Tibet - Lama Surya Das
Lama Surya Das introduces listeners to Tibet's most closely guarded enlightenment tradition - dzogchen, "The Natural Great Perfection." The Buddhist masters of Tibet believed that dzogchen was destined to become the single most powerful spiritual vehicle in the West. Why? "Because dzogchen takes the struggle out of meditation," he explains.
Surya Das guides you through each step of dzogchen practice, where you learn rigpa "natural awareness" practice; sky-gazing meditations; prayers and chants to open your heart and mind; and more.

Tony Scott - Music For Yoga Meditation and Other Joys Vol 1 and 2

Tony Scott - Music For Yoga Meditation and Other Joys Vol 1 and 2

You would expect 1968's Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys to have come out on an obscure San Francisco label run out of the back room of a natural foods store and feature amateurish players no one had ever heard of before or since. Yet, this duet album between clarinetist Tony Scott - a former hard bop player in the '50s who had become drawn into world music and a style that can only be called proto - ambient - and sitar player Collin Walcott is actually not just a lifestyle curio, but a musically interesting lifestyle curio. Strip away the Age of Aquarius trappings and Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys is not dissimilar to what Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders would get up to over the next decade:long, flowing melodies and one-chord drones colored by elements of Indian classical music and other world music influences. The nine tracks explore a surprising variety of moods and tonalities given the self-limiting instrument lineup, and though this is too twee and hippie-ish to be called jazz, ambient and space rock fans will be fascinated by it.

Tibet Traditions Rituelles Des Bonpos

Tibet Traditions Rituelles Des Bonpos
Recorded at Menri Monastary in 1981 and 1983. Includes: Chant dedicated to the protective divinity, Propitiation ceremony for Nag-chig, Tea offering, and Drum-beating in praise of Shenrab.

Yungdrung Bön, meaning ‘Eternal Light’ or ‘Enlightened Teaching’, is the original and authentic spiritual tradition of Tibet. It is based on the principle of practising unconditional love and compassion towards all and is Thegpa Chenpo or Mahayana in its approach. Many of the teachings are similar to those found in the four principal schools of Buddhism, especially the Nyingma-pa school, and are aimed at enabling all to access Enlightenment and freedom from the shackles of Samsara. The most obvious points of differentiation between the schools would appear to be in their points of origination, the number of refuge objects and in the nomenclature employed in relation to the deities and Jang-chub Sempas (Bodhisattvas).

Whereas general Buddhism relates back to the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni, (who lived approximately two and a half thousand years ago), Yungdrung Bön traces its lineage directly back to its founder, Bhuddha Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche, who came and taught in Wolmo Loong Ring (otherwise known as Shambala) over 18,000 years ago. From there his teachings spread around the world in different guises, being introduced into Tibet from the neighbouring country of Zhang-Zhung - which includes western Tibet and Gangchen Tisi (Mount Kailash).

There is a specific order and function for each of the chants on this recording, which work together in order to assist personal and planetary consciousness. TIBET: THE SURVIVAL OF THE SPIRIT

TIBET: THE SURVIVAL OF THE SPIRIT
1991, English, directed by Clemens Kuby
Shot in 1988 by filmakers who eluded their official Chinese guide,
this film is a rare, uncensored look at what has become of this Himalayan nation.
It shows a wrenching confrontation between two ideologies: the all-pervasive,
compassionate Buddhism of traditional Tibet and the materialistic, militaristic political dogma imposed by the invading Chinese.
The systematic eradication of Tibetan culture is exposed, and footage "liberated"
from a Chinese cameraman reveals the police storming the Johkang temple and brutalizing monks.
Yet through it all, the tibetans still visit revered sites, preserve the sacred dances, and quietly rebuild their ruined monasteries.

The Boy with Divine Powers - Buddha Boy

The Boy with Divine Powers - Buddha Boy
Ram Bahadur Bomjon "Buddha Boy" is a 15-year old Nepalese boy who was hailed by many to be Buddha incarnate - 11 months without any food, without any drop of water - just silently meditating in a tree-hole (like the Gautama Buddha). Mysteriously he vanished one day - as of March 2007 he is known, however, to be safely meditating in a pit in Ratanpuri village.

Discovery Channel last year had a feature on him in their show "The Boy With Divine Powers". Conclusion? It might not really be such a great hoax as everyone might have thought.

The Tao of Physics - Fritjof Capra

The Tao of Physics - Fritjof Capra
First published in 1975, The Tao of Physics rode the wave of fascination in exotic East Asian philosophies. Decades later, it still stands up to scrutiny, explicating not only Eastern philosophies but also how modern physics forces us into conceptions that have remarkable parallels. Covering over 3,000 years of widely divergent traditions across Asia, Capra can't help but blur lines in his generalizations. But the big picture is enough to see the value in them of experiential knowledge, the limits of objectivity, the absence of foundational matter, the interrelation of all things and events, and the fact that process is primary, not things. Capra finds the same notions in modern physics. Those approaching Eastern thought from a background of Western science will find reliable introductions here to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism and learn how commonalities among these systems of thought can offer a sort of philosophical underpinning for modern science. And those approaching modern physics from a background in Eastern mysticism will find precise yet comprehensible descriptions of a Western science that may reinvigorate a hope in the positive potential of scientific knowledge. Whatever your background, The Tao of Physics is a brilliant essay on the meeting of East and West, and on the invaluable possibilities that such a union promises.

Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light - Namkhai Norbu

Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light - Namkhai Norbu
Namkhai Norbu is a tibetan master of the Dzogchen tradition. He is a professor at the Oriental Institute of the University of Naples, Italy. He has authored many books including "The Crystal and the Way of Light", "The Cycle of Day and Night", and "Yantra Yoga".

In "Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light", Norbu Rinpoche gives instructions for developing clarity within the sleep and dream states.

He goes beyond the practices of lucid dreaming that have been popularized in the West, by presenting methods for guiding dream states that are part of a broader system for enhancing self-awareness called Dzogchen. In this tradition, the development of lucidity in the dream state is understood in the context of generating greater awareness for the ultimate purpose of attaining liberation.

Also included in this book is a text written by Mipham, the nineteenth-century master of Dzogchen, which offers additional insights into this extraordinary form of meditation and awareness.

The Roots of Buddhist Psychology -Jack Kornfield

The Roots of Buddhist Psychology -Jack Kornfield
The Buddha said many times that just as the great oceans have but one taste, so do all the true teachings of the dharma: the taste of freedom. Jack Kornfield’s The Roots of Buddhist Psychology is an invitation to drink deeply of these teachings – to taste the wisdom that flows from the heart of Buddhism’s most useful ideas on the interior life and what brings awakening, freedom, and happiness. Jack Kornfield opens this eternal view of the mind for all listeners on this six-cassette collection. From Suffering to Enlightenment Among the world’s great religions, Buddhism has developed a rich psychology based not on metaphysics, but on the human predicament. Through its strategies, you can discover for yourself how to find true freedom from worldly suffering. Buddhism views the mind as a maze of feelings, perceptions, and emotional states. Unhappiness is rooted in unskillful responses to our world: grasping when things are pleasant, aversion when they are unpleasant, and delusion/confusion when they are neutral. Through awareness training, Kornfield teaches, you can transform these responses into real skills that are the path to awakening and freedom.

Like no other teaching course, The Roots of Buddhist Psychology gives you these immediate strategies for living in the present: 12 profound lectures – each one a gem of intelligent wisdom – on Buddhism’s central teachings about the psyche and sacred attention. Here are nine hours of specific instruction, taught in the classic tradition and enlivened with many parables, worldly stories, and thoughts from artists, philosophers, and writers who have helped us see how to live true, useful lives. Join Jack Kornfield on The Roots of Buddhist Psychology and discover for yourself that what you seek is already here.

Stillness Speaks - Eckhart Tolle

Stillness Speaks - Eckhart Tolle
Expanding on his mantra—Get out of your head and into the moment—Eckhart Tolle offers this new book on living in the now. Here Tolle emphasizes the art of "inner stillness"--the place where thoughts, ego and attachments fall always and we are left only with what the moment has to offer: "When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world." Don't expect this to be a quick skim or even a straight-through read. Like his previous bestselling book The Power of Now, Tolle uses brief entries and numerous white spaces to give readers easy in-and-out access into enticing spiritual insights that expound on inner stillness, such as learning the difference between surrender and resignation, overcoming the fear death, and how to end suffering. In fact, this is designed to be an ongoing conversation. Pick it up any time or any place, but be sure to allow for plenty of breaks for serious contemplation. Even as you occasionally abandon the book, don't abandon the teachings, pleads Tolle. Embracing and practicing inner stillness is no longer a luxury, he writes, "but a necessity if humankind is not to destroy itself. At the present time the dysfunction of the old consciousness and the arising of the new are both accelerating. Paradoxically things are getting worse and bett! er at the same time, although 'the worse' is more apparent because it makes so much noise." Devotees who have read all of Tolle's books and audio tapes probably won't find new ideas or information here. But they may appreciate the refresher course --revisiting familiar concepts in a slightly different package

Buddhist Ethics Ebooks

Somebody a while back emailed and said I lacked Ethics for having a blog like this, Perhaps.
But not anymore!!!! Cause I just download some! ;)

Buddhist Ethics: A Very Short Introduction
The latter half of the twentieth century witnessed a growing interest in Buddhism, and it continues to capture the imagination of many in the West who see it as either an alternative or a supplement to their own religious beliefs. Numerous introductory books have appeared in recent years to cater for this growing interest, but almost none devotes attention to the specifically ethical dimension of the tradition. For complex cultural and historical reasons, ethics has not received as much attention in traditional Buddhist thought as it has in the West, and publications on the subject are few and far between. Here, Damien Keown, author of Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction , illustrates how Buddhism might approach a range of fascinating moral issues ranging from abortion and suicide to cloning.

An Introduction to Buddhist Ethics - Foundations, Values and Issues
This systematic introduction to Buddhist ethics is aimed at anyone interested in Buddhism, including students, scholars and general readers. Peter Harvey is the author of the acclaimed Introduction to Buddhism (Cambridge, 1990), and his new book is written in a clear style, assuming no prior knowledge. At the same time it develops a careful, probing analysis of the nature and practical dynamics of Buddhist ethics in both its unifying themes and in the particularities of different Buddhist traditions. The book applies Buddhist ethics to a range of issues of contemporary concern: humanity’s relationship with the rest of nature; economics; war and peace; euthanasia; abortion; the status of women; and homosexuality. Professor Harvey draws on texts of the main Buddhist traditions, and on historical and contemporary accounts of the behaviour of Buddhists, to describe existing Buddhist ethics, to assess different views within it, and to extend its application into new areas.

How to See Yourself as You Really Are - Dalai Lama

How to See Yourself as You Really Are - Dalai Lama
Like the two wings of a bird, love and insight work cooperatively to bring about enlightenment, says a fundamental Buddhist teaching. According to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we each possess the ability to achieve happiness and a meaningful life, but the key to realizing that goal is self-knowledge. In How to See Yourself As You Really Are, the world's foremost Buddhist leader and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize shows readers how to recognize and dispel misguided notions of self and embrace the world from a more realistic -- and loving -- perspective.

Step-by-step exercises help readers shatter their false assumptions and ideas and see the world as it actually exists. By directing our attention to the false veneer that so bedazzles our senses and our thoughts, His Holiness sets the stage for discovering the reality behind appearances. But getting past one's misconceptions is only a prelude to right action, and the book's final section describes how to harness the power of meditative concentration to the service of love, and vice versa, so that true altruistic enlightenment is attained.

Makoto Shinjitsu: Zen Meditation Music

Makoto Shinjitsu: Zen Meditation Music
On this collection of shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) pieces, Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin plays in the meditational style first developed by Zen monks, and the result is the perfect accompaniment to just about any quiet activity. Most of the pieces have a wandering melodic quality, accentuated on the title piece and on "Shizukesa" with shivering sustained notes. Certain pieces are evocative of natural sounds; "Daiwa-Gaku" sounds almost like the wind, while in places "(Ki-Sui-An) Sanya" reminds the listener of running water. "Five Minutes More" adds tiny tinkling bells to Seldin's flute, and "Jinbo-Sanya" is a more active, stronger piece. Makoto Shinjitsu isn't the sort of thing you have on while exercising or housecleaning, but it's just the thing for sitting--whether on your mat or in your car during rush hour.

Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin is a exclaimed american master of the shakuhachi, an end-blown 5-holed bamboo flute with a blowing edged notched at the end, unlike a baroque recorder with its blowing edge away from a fully enclosed mouthpiece (a fipple), the lips play an important role in allowing for an more expressive bending of the played note. Despite his excellent skills, I can't help feeling that his nuances are slightly off and that these pieces are less expressive and meditative than they should be. In a well played piece, a calm spirit should be transcended.

Tajima Tadashi - Master Of Shakuhachi

Tajima Tadashi - Master Of Shakuhachi
The shakuhachi has been much abused in the later half of the 20th century, by non-Japanese artists seeking to capitalize on its sensitive sound and hip Eastern origin to make incoherent mood music for health food stores. The reality of the instrument is one of quiet strength. The traditional version of this bamboo flute is large, over a foot and a half long with a large outside circumference. It achieves its unique sound from the musician's ability to balance the force needed to fill such a tool with air and the control to make it not only melodious, but contemplative. Tajima Tadashi performs a series of solo songs, all from the meditative tradition, created not for performance or ritual, but as a tool for the musician to achieve a state of meditation and to challenge himself in his art. These pieces show an accomplished artist pushing himself to the limit, not with wild virtuoso flights but with considered and complex melodies that are as ephemeral as snow and as strong as wind.

Stan Richardson Shakuhachi Meditation Music: Traditional Japanese Flute For Zen Contemplation
The tones of the bamboo flute are ancient Japanese tools for Zen enlightenment, said to channel spiritual energies and aid in meditation, yoga, and bodywork. Though the Shakuhachi flute is now used in many musical arenas, Stan Richardson is a purist in that he uses it exclusively for Zen meditation. The brilliance of this music is its minimalism. At times, one note seems to go on infinitely, but then surprising shifts and unexpected notes reveal a subtle, hypnotic power.

Pema Chodron - Double Pack

Pema Chodron - Good Medicine
Within Buddhism, there are many stories that refer to its founder as the "supreme physician" – a healer of all illness – mental, physical, and spiritual. The Buddha’s prescription for right living led directly to tonglen, a Tibetan meditation practice that is today the medicine our hearts have been searching for. On the new enhanced CD edition of Good Medicine, American Buddhist nun Pema Chodron shares the gift of this simple and elegant meditation system: a way to befriend ourselves, accept the past we have rejected, and widen our circle of compassion. Includes rare live footage with Pema Chodron, interview excerpts, and other enhancements available here for the first time.

The places that scare you - A guide to fearlessness in difficult times

Pema Chödrön may have more good one-liners than a Groucho Marx retrospective, but this nun's stingers go straight to the heart: "The essence of bravery is being without self-deception"; "When we practice generosity, we become intimate with our grasping"; "Difficult people are the greatest teachers." These are the punctuations to specific teachings of fearlessness. In The Places That Scare You, Chödrön introduces a host of the compassionate warriors' tools and concepts for transforming anxieties and negative emotions into positive living. Rather than steeling ourselves against hardship, she suggests we open ourselves to vulnerability; from this comes the loving kindness and compassion that are the wellsprings of joy. How do we achieve it? Through meditation, mindfulness, slogans, aspiration, and several other practices, such as tonglen, which is taking in the pain and suffering of others while sending out happiness to all--emphasis on the all. Chödrön introduces each of these practices in turn, backing them up with succinct practical reasoning and a framework of ideas that offers fresh interpretations of familiar words like strength, laziness, and groundlessness. Chödrön is the type of person you'd like to have with you in an emergency, and to deal with the extremes of daily life. In her absence, The Places That Scare You will do nicely.

Tao Te Ching (read by Jacob Needleman)
The Tao Te Ching, a 6th century B.C. Chinese masterpiece, is one of the world's most revered sources of spiritual wisdom. This authoritative translation by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English captures the essence of Lao Tsu's language, bringing the Tao Te Ching's powerful message to a whole new generation of students.

This collection is read by renowned philosopher and author Dr. Jacob Needleman, who also provides illuminating commentary on the text. This ancient classic presents timeless spiritual meditations on wisdom in action, illustrating important lessons that have resonated with its students for centuries.

The reading by Jacob Needleman of Jane English's translation is perhaps the finest version of the Tao De Ching in English. In addition to Dr. Needleman's reading, after the reading he provides a lecture that includes history to the Tao and a commentary / intrepretation of the text.

Having spent much time with Jacob Needleman's reading of the Tao Te Ching, I can say that it grows deeper and richer each time you listen to it.

Someone had previously posted a version of this audio, but I was unhappy with the quality and the fact that the commentary had been cut off. I am providing this version, complete in its full digital glory so that it can be enjoyed many times over without distraction or compromise.

Sayings of the Buddha (read by Jacob Needleman)

Sayings of the Buddha (read by Jacob Needleman)
Like the Tao Te Ching and the Bhagavad-Gita, this sacred text has guided the inner and outer lives of countless people in the art of living and the struggle for inner transformation. According to tradition, the words in The Dhammapada come directly from the mouth of Buddha. This translation in particular is among the most poetic and spiritually insightful.

After it is read, Dr. Jacob Needleman presents his own essay, which compares Buddhism to other religions and explains the significance of The Dhammapada in Buddhism.
This unabridged reading of the Buddha's own words, read by philosopher Jacob Needleman, is followed by Dr. Needleman's expert commentary on Buddhism and The Dhammapada.

Encyclopedia Of Buddhism

Encyclopedia Of Buddhism
Buddhism, according to the editor in chief of this encyclopedia, "is one of the three major world religions, along with Christianity and Islam." Unlike the other two, however, Buddhism lacks substantial reference works in Western languages. The majority are single-volume works, defining terms, concepts, deities, etc. The Encyclopedia of Buddhism, on the other hand, "seeks to document the range and depth of the Buddhist tradition in its many manifestations."
The nearly 500 entries are alphabetically arranged, signed by their authors, and conclude with see references and supplemental bibliographies. Article length ranges from 50 to 4,000 words. There are illustrations throughout, including three maps on the diffusion of Buddhism in Asia as well as an eight-page insert of color plates in each volume. The set ends with several time lines of Buddhist history and a good index. Given the long history Buddhism has enjoyed and the many different cultural regions and national traditions in which it has developed, two volumes are not enough to do the subject justice. Consequently, the entries tend to be thematic and inclusive in nature, with specific mention of, say, an individual or place being made within a broader survey article. While the cosmological, doctrinal, and ritual aspects of Buddhism are covered extensively, entries also treat the cultural, social, and political contexts that have shaped and been shaped by Buddhist thought (e.g., Economics, Education, Law). Entries for geographic locations provide nice historical surveys of the development of Buddhism to the present day and include the U.S and Europe. Buddhism's interaction with other world religions and philosophies (e.g., Christianity and Buddhism, Communism and Buddhism, Jainism and Buddhism) is treated. Finally, recognizing that Buddhism is a force in the world today, the editor has included entries that provide Buddhist perspectives on issues of contemporary concern (e.g., Abortion, Gender, Modernity and Buddhism).

The Unwinking Gaze The Inside Story of the Dalai Lama's Struggle for Tibet

The Unwinking Gaze The Inside Story of the Dalai Lama's Struggle for Tibet
Around 30 years ago the Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, publicly renounced his country's claim for independence from China, and to this day he still insists that separating the two countries is not his aim. The Chinese government remains convinced that the Dalai Lama is a separatist and – in public at least – refuses to speak with him.

However, as Joshua Dugdale's documentary shows, the wheels of diplomacy are ticking away behind the scenes.
The film, shot over three years and gaining unprecedented access to the Dalai Lama and his entourage, also gives us a startlingly intimate portrait of the man himself, a constantly giggling, extremely canny politician with little patience for his reputation back home as a supernatural healer.

Shot mostly on a handheld camera, the film spends much of its time hovering around the sidelines, eavesdropping on the Dalai Lama's coterie of whispering monks and advisors, but it is impressively even-handed, Dugdale seeking out comment from fiery Tibetan nationalists and emollient Chinese bureaucrats alike.

The Path to Tranquility: Daily Meditations - The Dalai Lama

The Path to Tranquility: Daily Meditations - The Dalai Lama
Wouldn't it be nice to have a handy collection of highlights from the Dalai Lama's writings and teachings? Renuka Singh, a student and friend of the Dalai Lama, brings together a sampling of his words for each day of the year in The Path to Tranquility. In her selections you can sense the intimate encouragement of the student-teacher relationship. The Dalai Lama's words are not distant platitudes or profound proclamations but rather small insights and patient exhortations to keep trying. "We can deny everything except that we have the possibility of being better." "As a spiritual trainee, you must be prepared to endure the hardships of being involved in a genuine spiritual pursuit." "Nothing is more important than guarding the mind." These thoughts are germane to practical cultivation, and pondering a daily passage is a great way to keep the mind coming back to its center. Take a page from the Dalai Lama, and set yourself on the path to tranquility.
Global volatility, spiritual hollowness, and environmental negligence prompted His Holiness, The Dalai Lama to share his philosophies and wisdom to help individuals find peace. Narration is distributed among three marvelous readers, who provide presentation diversity and encourage listening awareness. Laurie Anderson has a clear and inviting voice, tempered with hypnotic reverence. Robert Thurman, himself a Buddhist monk, convincingly adds authenticity to these penetrating teachings. Finally, B.D. Wong furnishes dramatic homage to His Holiness by way of a mesmerizing and stirring interpretation. This book is a gift to the human race from an unselfish and enlightened humanitarian

Dogen (1200-1253 C.E.) founded the Soto school of Zen Buddhism in Japan. His teachings are the very embodiment of the paradoxical blend of mystery and clarity that characterizes Zen. The selections in this program are from Moon in a Dewdrop, and were chosen by Gary Snyder.

Compassion in Action - Ram Dass

Compassion in Action: Setting Out on the Path of Service - Ram Dass

The freewheeling author of the pop spiritual classic Be Here Now teams with fellow Hindu devotee Bush to guide inexperienced Americans on to the path of compassionate action--offering his own spiritual autobiography as testimony to the transforming power of love and social action. Ram Dass, n‚ Richard Alpert, treats his famous psychedelic experience with Timothy Leary at Harvard in the early 60's as a spiritual turning point, granting him beautiful if ephemeral visions of unity with the cosmos. The real emotional possibilities behind those visions opened up to him, he says, when he found Neem Karoli Baba, his beloved Hindu spiritual teacher, who instructed him to tell the truth and always love everyone. It apparently took Ram Dass (so named by the guru after a monkey god that is an archetypal servant of man) several decades of spiritual work on himself while exploring different forms of volunteerism to glimpse how it is possible to fuse the quest for a truly liberated awareness with compassionate work for others: ``The only thing about being with people that `brings me down,' that keeps me from resting in spacious awareness, that deflates that state of joyful equanimity, is my own mind....'' Finally, through his experience as a fund-raiser and chairperson for the Seva Foundation, Ram Dass, along with Bush, has come to isolate simple steps--presented here, and including doing what you love and starting small--that others can follow to come to their own path of service. Occasionally repetitive and simplistic but nonetheless a warmhearted and genuinely inspiring introduction to compassion as a way of life.
