Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series with Shri R. Sharath

Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series with Shri R. Sharath

Sharath is described on the cover as “the foremost teacher of Ashtanga yoga today” and “the grandson of the founder of Ashtanga yoga, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois”. The production value of this film is very high - it was shot at Eddie Stern’s New York Shala, in a simple yet soothing space. The editing by Dominic Corigliano is flawless, with multiple cameras displayed only when necessary and smooth transitions between postures. The menu to navigate to a particular posture is intuitive and highly practical. Sharath did the voice over, counting vinyasas and calling out asanas. However, the real value of this DVD lies in the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the most advanced Ashtanga Yoga practitioner in the world practicing the Primary Series. I have practiced the Primary Series probably more than a thousand times, and have seen others, from beginners to 20-year senior teachers practice it countless times. And yet Sharath’s practice had a quality to it that I had not seen before. http://www.ashtangaproductions.com

Water Down the Ganges - Prem Joshua

Water Down the Ganges - Prem Joshua
The River Ganges plays an integral role in India’s everyday culture and spirituality. This watery ribbon feeds the land and cleanses the souls of millions on its winding journey from the Himalayas to the sea. Inspired by the legendary river’s mythic power, world travelers and long-time collaborators Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas, east-west alchemists of the highest order, invite you to take a trip down your "inner Ganges". Imbued with rich images of the East, Water Down the Ganges flows languidly from lush meditative ambience into rhythmic celebration of the great river of life.

Disciples of some of India’s most respected master musicians, Joshua and Manish present this masterfully crafted recording, a perfect balance between acoustic clarity and electronic boldness. Just as one never stands in the same river twice, Water Down the Ganges offers a refreshingly new experience with each listen.

Awareness - Anthony De Mello

Awareness by Anthony De Mello was one of those early books that I read while I was just starting off on a spiritual path. I highly recommended it.

Awareness - Anthony De Mello

The heart of Anthony de Mello's bestselling spiritual message is awareness. Mixing Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu breathing exercises, and psychological insight, de Mello's words of hope come together in Awareness in a grand synthesis.

In short chapters perfect for reading in quiet moments at home or at the office, he cajoles and challenges: We must leave this go-go-go world of illusion and become aware. And this only happens, he insists, by becoming alive to our most submerged and darkest feelings. We need to identify them, accept them as our own, not let them rule us- and allow this new awareness to change us. This, de Mello says, is the key to courage, to taking risks, to becoming alive to the needs and potential of others, whether at home or in the workplace.

Here, then, is a masterful book of the spirit, challenging us to wake up in every aspect of our lives.

ANTHONY DE MELLO was a Jesuit priest known throughout the world for his writings and spiritual conferences. He died suddenly in 1987. Among his many books are Sadhana and The Song of the Bird. J. Francis Stroud, the editor of Awareness, is a Jesuit priest who worked closely with Anthony de Mello.

Empty Cloud: The Teachings of Xu Yun

Empty Cloud: The Teachings of Xu Yun

Hsu Yun was one of the most influential Chán masters of the past two centuries, and arguably the most important in modern Chinese history. Unlike Catholicism and other branches of Christianity, there was no organization in China that embraced all monastics in China, nor even all monastics within the same sect. Traditionally each monastery was autonomous, with authority resting on each respective abbot. This changed with the rule of the Communist Party. In 1953, the Chinese Buddhist Association was established at a meeting with 121 delegates in Beijing. The meeting also elected a chairman, 4 honorary chairmen, 7 vice-chairmen, a secretary general, 3 deputy secretaries-general, 18 members of a standing committee, and 93 directors. The 4 elected honorary chairmen were the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama, the Grand Lama of Inner Mongolia, and Hsu Yun himself. Though Chán is less well known in the West compared to Japanese Zen, the teachings of Hsu Yun have persisted within Asia, and he is still a major figure of Pure Land Buddhism in East Asia. Outside of China, the influence of his teachings is strongest in Southeast Asia, particularly in Vietnam and Myanmar, as well as the Americas, where his teachings were transmitted through well known monastic students such as Venerable Hsuan Hua and Venerable Jy Din Shakya.

Music for Zen Meditation - Riley Lee

Music for Zen Meditation by Riley Lee spins drifting melodies that fill a room with silence as much as sound. With titles like "Sea Breeze" and "Serenity Flows," the songs reflect nature's stillness, melodies mimicking the gentle rhythms of nature.

The soft tone, more glimpses than tune, is written to carry us towards our centers. A dai shihan, or grandmaster, of the ancient shakuhachi flute tradition, Lee guides us deeper and deeper into ourselves. He embraces the essence of zen, exploring it with only his flute for a guide. For centuries, the shakuhachi has been an instrument of zen, as much as seated meditation has. Both are tools to find the center. Playing this flute is a spiritual discipline, referred to as "blowing Zen," suizen. As the artist plays, he, his instrument, and his music all become one. Zen encompasses recognizing the oneness of everything, as it guides the listener into its depths.

For those of us with more secular interests, the music is soft and peaceful, unintrusive. For stretching or for background music, Music for Zen Meditation fills the room with its own serenity. The only sound present is Lee's solitary flute, a single instrument with only five finger holes. Yet it produces a wide range of sound, echoing mournfully and then whispering like wind song. These tones sound far more genuine than the synthesizers and artificial cries of gulls gyrating on today's relaxation tapes.

This double CD collection offers 25 mystical songs, full of soft tones, drawing the listener deeper and deeper into herself. From "In Time Suspended" to "Cascade," the music flows like a mountain stream, still and vibrant. It offers centeredness, oneness and mystery. For in the echo of its silence is music, while each tone contains an orchestra of meaning.

Passage to Buddha 'Hwaomkyung' (1993)

Passage to Buddha 'Hwaomkyung' (1993)
Director Jang Sun Woo might be best known for provocative, controversial films, such as “Lies, A Petal, and To You From Me”, but he has a quiet side as well. Winner of the Alfred-Bauer Prize at the 1994 Berlin Film Festival, “HwaOmKyung” (a.k.a. “Passage to Buddha”, one of Jang’s best works, is a quiet and evocatively beautiful meditation on life. Based on former monk and political activist Go Eun’s novel, “HwaOmKyung” is one of the best Buddhist-themed films Korea has produced. Oh Tae Kyung (Old Boy) gives a stunning performance as Seon Jae, a young boy who spends his life on the road in search of his mother. A modern unfolding of the Avatamsaka sutra, his spiritual odyssey leads him to telling encounters with strange people and, eventually, the essence of Buddhism.

Manual of Zen Buddhism - D.T. Suzuki

Manual of Zen Buddhism - D.T. Suzuki
Here are the famous sutras, or sermons, of the Buddha; the gathas, or hymns; the intriguing philosophical puzzles known as koan; and the dharanis, or invocations to expel evil spirits. Included also are the recorded conversations of the great Buddhist monks — intimate dialogues on subjects of momentous importance. In addition to the written selections, all of them translated by Dr. Suzuki, there are reproductions of many Buddhist drawings and paintings, including religious statues found in Zen temples, each with an explanation of its significance, and the great series of allegorical paintings “The Ten Oxherding Pictures."
