Genuine Happiness: Meditation as the Path to Fulfillment

Genuine Happiness: Meditation as the Path to Fulfillment
Wallace, founder of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies, explores key Buddhist meditation-related concepts that aid the "conquest of our inner obscurations" and "present a path to inner fulfillment and human flourishing." He first examines several particular methods—such as "mindfulness of breathing"—for cultivating shamatha, a state of "meditative quiescence" in which people's capacity for attention is refined and stabilized. They can then use these techniques to make a direct, delusion-free investigation of their own bodies, feelings and thoughts. These insights, in turn, help them nurture hearts of compassion and equanimity and, ultimately, realize more advanced teachings such as cultivating bodhichitta (a "spirit of awakening"), dream yoga and a highly developed meditation technique known as dzogchen. Wallace's discussions are usually clear and helpful (on why meditation works: "sustained, continuous effort can actually reconfigure your brain"), and his questions invite readers to see for themselves if his assertions resonate. Moreover, each chapter contains guided meditations to help readers encounter the teachings more directly. Nevertheless, the text can become dense and self-referential, and if readers miss a particular point early on, the effectiveness of later sections may be lessened. The result is a solid—if advanced—examination of some key Buddhist meditation techniques that will appeal to the serious student more than the casual seeker.

Guided Mindfulness Meditation

Guided Mindfulness Meditation - Jon Kabat-Zinn
Guided Mindfulness Meditation is about learning to experience life fully as it unfolds—moment by moment. One popular misconception about meditation is that it is a way to make your mind blank so you can escape from what you are feeling. However, author Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn wants you to understand that meditation is an invitation to wake up, experience the fullness of your life, and transform your relationship with your problems, your fears, and any pain and stress in your life so that they don’t wind up controlling you and eroding the quality of your life and your creativity. It is not about running away, or manipulating mental states.

Through the practice of mindfulness, you can learn to develop greater calmness, clarity and insight in facing and embracing all your life experiences, even life’s trials, and turning them into occasions for learning, growing and deepening your own strength and wisdom.

The Anapanasati Sutta

The Anapanasati Sutta : A Practical Guide to Mindfulness of Breathing and Tranquil Wisdom Meditation - Ven. U Vimalaramsi
When the Bodhisattva sat under the Bodhi tree to meditate on the full moon night of May and made his great effort to attain the supreme nibbana, he recalled that not all forms of pleasure are unwholesome. He realized that there could be pleasurable feelings arising in the mind and body although there was not any attachment to anything. That very night, the Bodhisattva practiced "Tranquil Wisdom Meditation" through the method of opening and expanding the mind. In short, he practiced the "Anapanasati" or "Mindfulness of Breathing". And as we all know, he became the Buddha or the supremely enlightened one. The Anapanasati Sutta gives the most profound meditation instructions available today. It includes the "Four Foundations of Mindfulness" and the "Seven Enlightenment Factors" and shows how they are fulfilled through the practice of "Mindfulness of Breathing" . This is done by attaining all of the meditation stages (jhanas). This sutta shows the direct way to practice "Tranquil Wisdom Meditation" and does not categorize meditation practices.

Rational Mysticism: Dispatches from the Border Between Science and Spirituality

Rational Mysticism: Dispatches from the Border Between Science and Spirituality
John Horgan, author of the best-selling The End of Science, chronicles the most advanced research into the mechanics—and meaning—of mystical experiences. How do trances, visions, prayer, satori, and other mystical experiences "work"? What induces and defines them? Is there a scientific explanation for religious mysteries and transcendent meditation?

John Horgan investigates a wide range of fields — chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, theology, and more — to narrow the gap between reason and mystical phenomena. As both a seeker and an award-winning journalist, Horgan consulted a wide range of experts, including theologian Huston Smith, spiritual heir to Joseph Campbell; Andrew Newberg, the scientist whose quest for the "God module" was the focus of a Newsweek cover story; Ken Wilber, prominent transpersonal psychologist; Alexander Shulgin, legendary psychedelic drug chemist; and Susan Blackmore, Oxford-educated psychologist, parapsychology debunker, and Zen practitioner. Horgan explores the striking similarities between "mystical technologies" like sensory deprivation, prayer, fasting, trance, dancing, meditation, and drug trips.

He participates in experiments that seek the neurological underpinnings of mystical experiences. And, finally, he recounts his own search for enlightenment — adventurous, poignant, and sometimes surprisingly comic. Horgan"s conclusions resonate with the controversial climax of The End of Science, because, as he argues, the most enlightened mystics and the most enlightened scientists end up in the same place — confronting the imponderable depth of the universe.

Meditator's Atlas: A Roadmap to the Inner World

Gassho to Lóránt for this book.

Meditator's Atlas: A Roadmap to the Inner World
The Meditator's Atlas truly is a comprehensive and trustworthy "roadmap of the inner world" for anyone who meditates. What makes this book unique is the way Flickstein uses two classic Buddhist texts - the Path of Purification, and the Four Foundations of Mindfulness-to help readers make clear sense out of the new, fascinating, and often challenging states that one may encounter on the long journey to enlightenment. Readers will come away from this book with their own insights clarified and with a helpful sense of what lies ahead. The Meditator's Atlas will also appeal to "spiritual sightseers" - those who just want to enjoy a guided tour of the compelling inner territory of meditation.

Selfless Insight: Zen and the Meditative Transformations of Consciousness

Selfless Insight: Zen and the Meditative Transformations of Consciousness
When neurology researcher James Austin began Zen training, he found that his medical education was inadequate. During the past three decades, he has been at the cutting edge of both Zen and neuroscience, constantly discovering new examples of how these two large fields each illuminate the other. Now, in Selfless Insight, Austin arrives at a fresh synthesis, one that invokes the latest brain research to explain the basis for meditative states and clarifies what Zen awakening implies for our understanding of consciousness.

Austin, author of the widely read Zen and the Brain, reminds us why Zen meditation is not only mindfully attentive but evolves to become increasingly selfless and intuitive. Meditators are gradually learning how to replace over-emotionality with calm, clear, objective comprehension.

In this new book, Austin discusses how meditation trains our attention, reprogramming it toward subtle forms of awareness that are more openly mindful. He explains how our maladaptive notions of self are rooted in interactive brain functions. And he describes how, after the extraordinary, deep states of kensho-satori strike off the roots of the self, a flash of transforming insight-wisdom leads toward ways of living more harmoniously and selflessly.

Selfless Insight is the capstone to Austin's journey both as a creative neuroscientist and as a Zen practitioner. His quest has spanned an era of unprecedented progress in brain research and has helped define the exciting new field of contemplative neuroscience.

Meditation - In the Perspective of Science, Health and Spirituality (Compilation)

Schopenhauer over on The Pirate Bay has put together a great collection of material on Buddhism and Meditation. Some very rare interviews and material in here.

Meditation - In the Perspective of Science, Health and Spirituality (Compilation)

What do we got here? Well, 21 Videoclips (9 hours and 34 minutes) 14 Audiobooks (299 audiofiles with a total duration of 65 hours and 53 minutes) 1 Album and 1 E-book There are many perspectives on meditation, and also people have different ideas about it; Meditation for some is a purely medical treatment founded on evidence based research. Sometimes it is connected with an interest to investigate neurological activity in relation to the study of consciousness. For other people it is just something related to a sense of a healthy lifestyle and personal well-being. And for yet others it is a part of developing, or deepening their spiritual or religious life. I did put a lot of effort into making a DVD that appeals to any of these three perspectives or categories that might be in your particularly, taste, interest or need, without compromising on either quantity/quality of material. Use what you find helpful for yourself, discard what you don't find any value in. Almost every person on this DVD with very few exceptions has either a M.D or a PhD in something, that is related to what they offer to teach. It just turned out that way, and it gives a small guarantee that those persons didn't get into the field 2 months ago just to make a bit of quick and easy cash.I didn't put any of the typical new-age people or so on this DVD just because that was not the kind of compilation i had in mind this time. But there are both scientist and people representing different spiritual traditions on the DVD.

Wherever You Go There You Are - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Wherever You Go There You Are - Jon Kabat-Zinn

In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living--a book in which he presented basic meditation techniques as a way of reducing stress and healing from illness--here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. MP3 audio.

Planet Yoga: Music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace

Planet Yoga: Music for Yoga, Meditation and Peace
If you ever attended a yoga class where background music was played or if you have read any yoga magazines, chances are that you are familiar with most of the artists compiled under this two-Cd album. Names such as Krishna Das, Jay Uttal, Deva Premal and Rasa, just to name a few, are some of the great artists grouped here. Even if you don't practice yoga, but enjoy listening to world (or trance) music, you'll probably enjoy this tape as much as I do.
The first Cd has Indian healing chants but performed by westerners, (as Krishna Das writes on the intro to the booklet); so if the lyrics are Indian, the music is not. It may fall in the category of enviromental or acoustic which makes it more appealing for our western taste.
